Kumite - Premier League-Style Rule Summary

Scoring:
  • Yuko — 1 point: A controlled punch or hand technique to a scoring area.
  • Waza-ari — 2 points: A controlled kick to the body.
  • Ippon — 3 points: A controlled kick to the head or a qualifying hand technique delivered against a downed opponent.

Kicking an opponent who is lying flat on the floor is prohibited.

Age Groups:
The following age groups will be offered:
  • 12-13
  • 14-15
  • 16-17

Weight Classes:
Male: 
  • 12-13:     -45kg, -50 kg, -55 kg, +55 kg
  • 14-15:    -57kg, -63 kg, -70 kg, +70 kg
  • 16-17:    -61 kg, -68 kg, -76 kg, +76 kg
Female:​
  • 12-13:   -42 kg, -47 kg, +47 kg
  • 14-15:   -47 kg, -54 kg, +54 kg
  • 16-17:   -48 kg, -53 kg, -59 kg, +59 kg
** we reserve the right to split or combine divisions.

Bout Duration:
  • U18 bouts will be two minutes, stop time.

Methods of Winning:
A competitor may win by:
  • Establishing an eight-point lead.
  • Having more points when time expires.
  • Holding the first-unopposed-score advantage, or Senshu, when the score is tied.
  • Winning by judges’ decision.
  • The opponent being disqualified.
  • The opponent withdrawing or being unable to continue.

Contact and Control:
  • Controlled contact to the body is permitted.
  • Techniques directed to the Jodan area must be controlled and are generally limited to light skin touch. Excessive contact will be penalized.
  • A Jodan technique may score when it is stopped within the following distance from the target:
    • Kicks: Within 10 centimeters.
    • Hand techniques: Within 5 centimeters.
  • Jodan techniques may make light skin contact but must not cause impact or injury.​

Common Violations:
Common violations include:
  • Excessive contact.
  • Attacks to prohibited areas.
  • Dangerous or uncontrolled throws.
  • Uncontrolled attacks.
  • Leaving the competition area.
  • Passivity.
  • Avoiding combat.
  • Unnecessary grabbing, clinching, or wrestling.
  • Feigning or exaggerating an injury.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct.

Warnings and Penalties
Minor violations will progress through Chui warnings, followed by Hansoku Chui.
Continued violations or serious infractions may result in:
  • Hansoku: Disqualification from the bout.
  • Shikkaku: Disqualification from the tournament.

Atoshi Baraku
  • Atoshi Baraku will be called when 15 seconds remain in the bout.

Repechage and Third Place
  • All IGB-Style divisions will use a repechage format and award two third-place finishes.

Four-Corner Judge System
  • When four corner judges are used, the corner judges will indicate points only. Corner judges will not indicate warnings or penalties.
  • When more than one judge indicates a score for the same competitor but the judges indicate different point values, the higher score will be awarded.
  • This also applies when two judges indicate different scores for each competitor. Each competitor will receive the highest score indicated by the judges supporting that competitor.

Video Review
  • Video review will not be available or permitted at this tournament. All referee and judge decisions made during the match are final and may not be challenged through video footage, recordings, or electronic replay.
